We organized a Reading Rally 6.-14.2.2009. The Reading Rally is a playful competition between the classes of the school. The pupils of every class are reading as many books as possible during this period. There were three categories in the rally: 0-2 graders, 3-4 graders and 5-6 graders. The winner is the class which reads most pages in average. Reading Rally is a great opportunity to encourage children to read books and to show them how wonderful reading can be.

Rally culminated in Reading Saturday on Valentine´s Day, February 14th. There were a great variety of actions. The gate-keeper of Wonderland with her helpers led us to the world of fairytales during the morning assembly. We heard our own song "Come with me to meet fairytales". The children's writer Inkeri Karvonen, who wrote the words of the song and the composer Lauri-Kalle Kallunki, were present at the event.

Then first, second and third graders went to the story workshop, where the theme was the well known Finnish animal characters. Inkeri Karvonen told pupils her fairytale "Owl's house". She had got the idea of the story a few years ago with the help of some pupils in our school. It's important to become familiar with fairytales, because they have a deep impact on the development of the children. They stimulate imagination and help to understand the problems of the life.

Fourth, fifth and sixth graders had an opportunity to go to the school library and become familiar with fantasy and mythic animals. They also heard Greek myths and legends. Supernatural beings and events were very exciting. After the lesson pupils were on a visit to the library bus and they borrowed books.

There were many exhibitions all over the school. Pupils had made fantasy and myth creatures, owls, foxes and other animals.
During the breaks there was an amusing hugging competition which was organized by pupils' council. Those pupils, who hugged most, awarded a prize. By that way each class got "the master of the hugs".

In this Photo our storyteller Inkeri Karvonen tells her fairytale "Owl's house".
